Sarah Mosley

Sara Richards Mosley was born on October 30, 1944 to Joe and Pearl Richards. Sara, a life-long resident of Brookfield, graduated with the Brookfield High School Class of 1962. While at BHS Sara was very involved in her studies and active in many organizations and was a cheerleader and captain her senior year. She married Derril "Butch" Mosley on March 28, 1964, and were proud parents of a daughter, Leslee Jo, who died in 1980 of a tragic accident.

Sara graduated from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) with a B.S degree in Business Education in August of 1965 and accepted her first teaching position in the same month at Brookfield High School. Serving as an educator in the R-3 District for 31 years, Sara taught typing, shorthand, accounting, computer classes, and later was appointed as the district's first Computer/Technology Coordinator. Sara was instrumental in establishing the high school Coquette dance team in 1970 and coached for 10 years. Sara was an inspirational and compassionate teacher, class sponsor, and role model for every student that entered her classroom.

Highlights of Sara's career in education have been writing, receiving, and successfully implementing three, $50,000 grants for the school district to set up, manage, and troubleshoot K-12 & Voc-Tech Ethernet systems, added hardware and software to classrooms K-12, and working with K-6 teachers in a Creative Writing Program. The grants also placed at least one computer in ever classroom K-12 and set up a middle school computer lab. She worked with the District librarians who had received two $50,000 grants that automated the library systems for the schools. Sara trained the K-12 faculty and office staff in after-school workshops on the basics of using computers, word processing & spreadsheet programs, electronic grade books, and electronic roll taking. As a Junior Class Sponsor, Sara was part of the initiative to institute the Grand March at prom each year, now an honored tradition. As sponsor of National Honor Society Sara introduced early-morning NHS meetings with breakfast at local restaurants. Sara was one of the two recipients of the 1995 General Hurlbut Award for Outstanding Teacher of Brookfield School District.

Sara has served as secretary and president of the Community Teachers' Association, was a member of the Missouri State Teachers' Association for 31 years, and served on numerous school-appointed boards. She is an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Brookfield and has served as Sunday School director, chairperson of the Finance committee, librarian, chairperson of the pastor Parish committee, member of the board for the Day Care program, and served as Bible School Director. She has served as secretary of the local Community Chest Committee, served on a Vocational Advisory Board regarding Technology, a member of Missouri Retired Teachers Association, served as vice president and president of the Linn County Retired Teachers' Association, is currently serving as president of Athena Club, and was a past judge for BHS Hall of Fame and Alumni Weekend parade.
