Dan Haskell

Dan Haskell was an accomplished and admired former BHS faculty member. Born on September 6, 1943, to parents Ralph and Rosalie Haskell, Dan was a member of the South Harrison High School Class of 1962. Dan was a standout athlete in football and track. Dan came to Brookfield as a student teacher and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1966 with a degree in physical education and minor in industrial arts education. Dan received a football scholarship at Northwest and was a member of the school recording-holding 4x4 track relay team. Brookfield was his first teaching assignment and coached football, basketball, and track. He also asked if he could start a wrestling program for Brookfield High School. The administration agreed and in 1967 Dan became the first wrestling coach at BHS. In 1968 Dan was drafted into the army to fight in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne, one of the toughest divisions in the military. After serving in the military, he returned to Brookfield, married Jane Biegel (BHS Class of 1968) and took over the wrestling program once again. From 1971-1977 Coach Haskell helped build the Junior High program to help feed the high school program. Coach Haskell left Brookfield in 1983 to teach and coach at Rolla High School. Although Dan left for Rolla, wife Jane said, "I believe the best time of his life was teaching and coaching in Brookfield." Coach Haskell started a sport at BHS that has become one of the highest achieving and respected sports in Brookfield history and around the state of Missouri. Dan passed away on August 31, 2015.
