Colonel Lloyd E. "Jerry" Goodwine, USMC

Col. Lloyd E. "Jerry" Goodwine, USMC (Ret.) was born March 18, 1932, in Kansas City, MO, to Harry and Corrine Goodwine. Jerry was a graduate of Brookfield High School Class of 1950. He was very popular with his fellow students, held several class offices, and was president of the student body his senior year. An outstanding athlete, he played both football and basketball for three years. He also participated in both instrumental and vocal music and appeared in two operettas and the senior play. A natural humorist, he wrote and performed in many skits and programs throughout his high school tenure. Upon graduation, he was selected as a recipient of the NROTC scholarship at the University of Mississippi.

At "Ole Miss', he lettered four years on the university's varsity rifle team and later served as president of the University of Mississippi alumni varsity lettermen's club. Jerry graduated in 1954 with a B.S. in physics and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, USMC. Goodwine served 30 years in the Marines, including 2 tours in Vietnam with the 3rd Shore Party Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and Naval Forces Vietnam (Joint US Public Affairs Office). He was also involved in the planning and execution of Operations Frequent Wind and Eagle Pull, the evacuation of American civilians and "at-risk" nationals from Saigon, South Vietnam and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was one of the last Americans to be evacuated. He retired from active duty on April 30, 1984, with the rank of colonel. He spent his retirement years working in real estate, serving as a technical consultant for the Marines, and senior docent and administrator for the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA.

His decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal (with Valor Device and gold star), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (with gold star), Vietnam Service Medal with two gold stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation (with Palm), Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (with device). *Each gold star represents an additional award of that decoration.

Colonel Goodwine passed away on March 25, 2016, and was survived by his wife of 57 years, Masako; his children, Kurt, Lisa, Karen, Eric; and 3 grandchildren.
